1 year later: Remembering the Allen mall mass shooting victims

Allen, Texas — May 6 marks one year since a gunman killed eight people – including three children – outside Allen Premium Outlets in Texas.

The city is hosting a memorial at 6:30 p.m. at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center. The program will include performances from the Allen High School choir and The Allen Philharmonic Orchestra & Symphony Chorus, along with a time of interfaith reflection.

The work “In Lumine,” was specially commissioned by the community orchestra as a tribute to the victims: Cindy, Kyu and James Cho, sisters Daniela and Sofia Mendoza, Aishwarya Thatikonda , Christian LaCour and Elio Cumana-Rivas.

Cox Elementary School in Sachse will also hold a remembrance event at 11:30 p.m. to honor the Mendoza sisters, who attended the school. A butterfly release is scheduled and a crew will break ground on a new memorial garden area honoring the sisters. Students and staff were encouraged to wear yellow, the girls’ favorite color.

A citywide moment of silence begins at 3:36 p.m., the exact time the first gunshots rang out, according to law enforcement officials.
