AP Top 25 Rankings: Georgia sits atop of preseason poll

Written by Desmond Purnell | Aug 13, 2024

One of the first signs the college football season is near... the release of the season's first Associated Press Top 25. This year's poll has a familiar name sitting at the top. For a second year in a row, Georgia is No. 1 in the preseason AP Poll.

Bulldogs Head Coach, Kirby Smart has a treasure trove of weapons at his disposal heading into the 2024 season, beginning with his star quarterback, Carson Beck. The 6 foot 3, 233 lbs Jacksonville, Florida native is one of the preseason favorites to win The Heisman Trophy. Last season, Beck led Georgia to a 13-1 record. He threw for 3,941 yards which was 3rd best in the FBS. Beck also threw for 24 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.

Beck will lean on his junior wide out, Dillon Bell. Bell's versatility and explosiveness made him one of Beck's primary targets towards the end of last season. The Bulldogs are betting on the Houston, Texas native to continue his progression this season.

Defensively, Georgia is expected to have one of the best units in the country. What else is new? The Bulldogs front seven is stout, led by Mykel Williams who's making the move from pass rusher to outside linebacker.

Georgia has a great chance at winning its third championship in four years. The road to the national title game should provide some resistance for The Bulldogs. UGA will face five opponents ( No. 4 Texas, No. 5 Alabama, No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 15 Tennessee and No. 14 Clemson) currently ranked in The AP Top 25. Georgia opens their season, at home against Clemson on August 31st.
