Melania Trump reacts to husband's assassination attempt, calls alleged shooter 'a monster'

United States — In the wake of Saturday's apparent assassination attempt of Donald Trump, many have joined the former president in expressing their outrage mixed with gratitude and love for the victims.

Sunday morning, Trump shared his gratitude on Truth Social saying, “Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening. We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness. Our love goes out to the other victims and their families. We pray for the recovery of those who were wounded, and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed. In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win. I truly love our Country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin."

Trump was wounded in his right ear Saturday, July 13, during his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. By Sunday morning, the FBI had identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Secret Service agents reportedly fatally shot Crooks, who attacked from an elevated position outside the rally venue at the Butler Farm Show grounds where the rally was held, the agency said.

One attendee was killed and two spectators were critically injured, authorities said.

Former first lady Melania Trump described Crooks as "a monster who recognized my husband as an inhumane political machine."

In a lengthy statement shared on X, she encouraged Americans to let "common sense ascend" and bring the country back together. She expressed gratitude for the Secret Service agents who shielded her husband and law enforcement officials who protected him. Melania also acknowledged the victims.

"To the families of the innocent victims who are now suffering from this heinous act, I humbly offer my sincerest sympathy. Your need to summon your inner strength for such a terrible reason saddens me,” Melania added.

The shooting comes right before Trump is set to accept the 2024 presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention this coming week.
