Paris, France — Entering his 22nd NBA season, LeBron James has claimed nearly every accolade imaginable, but Monday’s honor, is potentially the most prestigious of his iconic career. James will be a flag bearer during the opening ceremonies of this summer’s 2024 Olympic Games. The Lakers Star is the first NBA player to receive the honor.
In a statement from London, where Team USA is preparing for its final tune up game for the Olympics, Monday against Germany, James said, “It’s an incredible honor to represent the United State on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together.”

James’ NBA resume includes 20 NBA All-star appearances, four NBA Championships and the NBA’s all-time leading scoring record. At the age of 39, James is now competing in his fourth Olympics. He led The Men’s U.S. Basketball Team to gold medals in 2008 and 2012 – plus a bronze in 2004.
Inspiring others by his example has fueled James’ greatness.
“For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations,” James said. “Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”
James was voted by his fellow Olympians to be a flag bearer for the U.S. A female flag bearer will be named on Tuesday.
