Paris, France — Tennis star Coco Gauff is making her first Olympic appearance and already she’s captured one of the Games’ top honors.
Gauff will join LeBron James as a flag bearer for the U.S. Olympic team during Friday’s opening ceremony of The Paris Olympics. At 20-years-old, Gauff is the youngest flagbearer ever for Team U.S.A. at an Olympic opening ceremony. She’s also the first ever tennis player to receive the honor.
“I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the Opening Ceremony,” Gauff said. “I could not be prouder to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is – at a moment where we can bring athletes and fans together from around the world.”

Gauff is regarded as one of the best women’s tennis players in the world. She is currently ranked No. 2 in the Women’s Tennis Association ratings. Gauff is also the reigning U.S. Open singles champion.
Gauff made the American team for the Tokyo Games three years ago but had to forfeit those Olympics because she tested positive for COVID-19 right before she was scheduled to fly to Japan. Gauff is now prepared to make up for lost time – while carrying the U.S. flag during one of the Olympics most symbolic moments.
